Suggestions on Writing a Research Proposal
Having decided on your research topic, defined research questions and
designed appropriate methods, you now need to convey your ideas in a
research proposal. A research proposal will help you to organize your
thoughts, to convince others the importance of your research and to
demonstrate your knowledge and ability. Although you may not be able to
complete the research in this course, you will conduct various forms of
research with your classmates, and get a good sense of what sociological
research is.
Your research proposal should address the following issues, although it
is not necessary for you to organize it in exactly same order.
I. Introduction
This part contains a statement of your research topic, and why it is of
interest or importance to the field. This often involves brief, broad
mention of crucial pieces of prior research (literature). It should also
contain the specific questions you hope to answer with your research.
II. Literature Review
This section should contain a more detailed and extensive discussion of
research related to your topic. You should do some research before you
start to write this section, either by searching online or skim through
related chapters in your textbook. This is probably the best place to
fully lay out your concept definitions. You may discuss how others have
defined them, and what results they might have found that relate to your
questions. You may also state your theory(s) and hypotheses here.
III. Methods
This section should contain a discussion of the research design.
Basically speaking, it is about how you are going to collect your data
and do analysis. If you are going to do a survey, you would want to
discuss the type of survey (interview, questionnaire, etc.) and the
target population (subjects). You should outline how you will measure
your variables. You should also discuss any potential problems that might oc
cur in the research.
IV. Summary
This section should give a brief wrap-up of the proposed research, and
should include some comments on the results you expect or hope to find
based on your literature review.
V. References
List all the works you reference in this proposal in an alphabetic (by
author) order.
